Caspar (or Gaspar) van Wittel (born Jasper Adriaensz van Wittel, Italian name variations: Gaspare Vanvitelli, Gasparo degli Occhiali) was a Dutch painter and draughtsman who had a long career in Rome. The visionary Vanvitelli leaves in fact a beautiful series of representations of Italian cities, precise, faithful, detailed, documents that we witness useful moments for scholars to better understand the spirit of the age and the artist. Also nicknamed "Gaspare with glasses" since 1712, Vanvitelli loses most of the sight so much that from 1730 onwards he will no longer be able to work. He is also considered to have influenced one of the major Italian "vedutisti", the Venetian painter Canaletto. Some of the views he painted during his visit to Venice around 1697 anticipate Canaletto in their perspective layout and in the angle in which the scene is presented.
